THE PLACE WHERE I SPEND AN HOUR A DAY GETTING WORDS OUT OF MY HEAD
KEPT HERE, SO FRIENDS FROM AFAR CAN TELL ME WHAT TO DITCH, WHAT TO KEEP WORKING ON
I AM, THEY SAY, UNMOTIVATED
I love you.
That is the basis of this work. Everything I do I do because I believe in you. I believe in the potential that exists in you still, even after everything that has happened. We may have had some bad nights. We may have had some bad moments and made some bad calls. I fear nothing more than those that do not make mistakes because those that make no mistakes learn no lessons. We may have come up against the wall and given up for fear of the sheer size of it. Or we may have climbed; our faith in the strength of our arms and our sheer teeth-into-tongue will to pull ourselves up regardless of gravity’s opinion on the subject.
We may even have fallen and smashed our pretty faces on these blood strewn rocks at the wall’s base.
I don’t care. Broken or not, I love you still.
You see, brother, we are still here.
We are still breathing. The nature of our lives may have changed. We may have been altered slightly. We take our wounds and we take out hits with pride. We learn a pain walk to get around the fact that our leg is broken and we learn to hold the sword in the other hand when we’ve lost our fingers.
But every morning, pain notwithstanding, you wake with a glow in your eyes.
Every morning the potential fills you. I love that. That is the basis of the work. I’ll carry you if I have to for a while because I know it won’t be for long. I see it every time I look at you. It won’t be long at all. So I polish up your armour and I arrange your papers and I get you ready once more.
We stand looking at that wall and grins break out on our faces. It is just a fucking wall. We can beat a fucking wall. Maybe not today, sure. Today can be for shaking angry rage and self regret and recriminations. That’s okay. I have those days too. But soon love. You know who you are. You know who I am. We know what we can do. And we know what this is.
It is just a fucking wall.
I love you. Which is the basis of this work. We are going to climb. It is just a wall. And the world beyond it that you feel so completely locked out of right now, that, love… that is our home. That is our destiny. That is where you are from and that is where you belong. So that is where we will go.I fear nothing like those that never make mistakes. I fear nothing like those that never face a wall.
For those that never face walls never learn their lessons. The most important lesson being, frankly, NO ONE NEEDS TO SCALE A WALL ALONE. So take my hand brother. It’s time to go, and grin, and smile again.Because you know what I hear? I hear that on the other side there is water... cold water and sweet water, deep enough to dive.
